Starting Your Search for a Provider
Your journey to find a therapist in Baltimore
As a non-native Baltimorean, I’ve lived all over the city this past decade plus -- moving here for family then school then job opportunities and staying because it's where I made a life for myself. As a trauma therapist in Baltimore, people often ask me how to find a therapist. They share about their experiences with therapy in the past, they wonder about a certain modality and if it will make the difference for them. They typically search for someone close by or who accepts their insurance. We live in a densely packed and diverse region with loads of helping professionals yet it can be a real journey finding someone who will help create lasting change in your life.
If you are looking for a life coach, counselor, therapist, or psychologist - I’d like to help you find someone who can help. And who gets you and your unique experiences.
I want to help you find a therapist in Baltimore
The following are some tips that may help guide your search for the right matching provider:
Tip #1: Ask your network!
Family, friends and colleagues can often be our greatest resource. They know us and there is a high likelihood of their referrals being a good match. Ask other providers you know and trust like OBGYN, PCP, physical therapist, psychiatrist, etc. It can also help when we let the people in our lives know we’re struggling or seeking help.
Tip #2: Call your insurance and know your benefits
Sometimes folks reach out to insurance for a list of providers. Unfortunately this process can be grueling for the person seeking help. There can be huge, generalized and often out of date lists of every therapist credentialed with them in the state of Maryland. If feelings of overwhelm are why you’re seeking to start therapy, finding help shouldn’t add to that mindset.
It can be useful to call insurance and have a sound understanding of your in-network and out-of-network benefits. This will be important information as you determine who you want to work with and what the costs to you will be. Some folks have out-of-network benefits that reimburse for a portion or all of the cost of services. For more information see my FAQ for insurance.
Tip #3: Psychology today
This can be a starting place - get a small taste of how people share about themselves and their work. There is a filtered search allowing you to get even more specified in your needs.
Tip #4: Provider Directory
Specialized directories can be a more useful resource. There's a higher likelihood these providers are vetted, have specialized knowledge, training and are making an effort to reach their intended audience - you! To name a few:
Postpartum Support International - https://psidirectory.com/
Inclusive Provider Network - https://www.inclusiveproviders.com/
Trauma Therapist Network - https://traumatherapistnetwork.com/
Touchstone Institute - https://www.touchstoneinstitute.org/therapist-network
Tip #5: Therapist or counselor?
Therapists (LCPCs, LMFTs, LCSWs, LCSW-Cs - we love acronyms in this field!), Coaches, Psychologists, Psychiatrists, Consultants… Check out my blog post about how to differentiate when choosing a provider.
Tip #6: Google
Lots of folks find me through a standard google search. If you’re willing to do a bit of sifting through - googling can be a way to review a lot of websites and begin getting of sense who might meet your needs.
Tip #7: Schedule some consultations
I highly recommend scheduling a few consultations and getting a feel for how providers compare. Most providers will offer a free 15-20 minute consultation before booking an intake.
